There are an estimated 16 million diabetics in the United States, and for some, insulin infusion pump therapy is a treatment option that facilitates improved blood glucose control and allows for lifestyle flexibility. The nurse must be knowledgeable about the management of insulin pump therapy, complications, education of the patient, insulin adjustment, programming the pump and other techniques of use in the hospital or home setting. Complications, including infection and hypoglycemia, are reviewed.
